PHOBIA SERIES - BACTERIA

Bacteria:

Why are we afraid of them?

Bacteria. Urg! Those tiny creatures which are of about 1nm in diameter and is impossible to see them in naked eyes. But they can see us! These ugly and nasty living things can enter our bodies and feed upon our immunity. Do you think that you house is spotless? Think again. An average house has 150 bacteria per inch on light switches, 200 on a fairly large sized telephones and about 1.5 million bacteria in toilets. You can’t escape, you can’t cheat but you can only wait till once of those enter your body. This makes me think whether Earth is the best planet for all us to live.....

Scientific facts and ways not to be Bacteriophobic:

Woah woah! Calm down! Bacteria is tiny. Agreed. There are trillions and trillions of bacteria around Earth. Agreed. But do you know that there are millions of bacteria inside and outside your body right this minute? Yeah. You heard me right. Millions of bacteria are present inside and outside your body. Before you panic, you gotta know this that there are two types of bacteria. Good and bad. Yeah. Just like hero and villain, we have good and bad bacteria. Good bacterium is so good that instead of trying to kill us, it actually helps us in various types of things. Curd, which we all eat, is made from a good bacterium Lactobacillus. Cheese is too made up of a good bacterium Lactococcus or sometimes even Lactobacillus. You might say ‘Nice going French people! Just don’t complain if you get a tummy ache!’ but eating these kind of food actually provide valuable vitamins and nutrition. And the list does not stop here. Bacterium has helped us in new discoveries and inventions of various things. It also provide us with different types of medicines. So, is that enough to make you love bacterium?

Now let’s come to bad bacteria. Some dangerous and life-threatening diseases are caused by them. Like - Food Poisoning, Malaria, etc. Did you study the Black Death in your history books? If you had studied it you would  know that this pandemic was caused by a bacterium Yersinia pestis. Even though this bacterium is hard to transmit, it managed to kill so many people because of its favourite transport - Rats.

You might now be wondering if I am writing this blog for making you fearless or to make you more fearful. Well, if I want to make you fearless, I gotta tell all the facts to you so that you are not too fearless. Yup. Being afraid kinda helps sometimes. I will tell that in the upcoming blogs.

How can we be safe from bacteria?

Simple. Follow these practices, you would be safe from bacteria for the longest time possible:

  1. Wash veggies and fruits throughly before eating as it is favourite spot for most of the germs and bacteria so that they could enter your body.
  2. Wash your hands before eating. Beside being appreciated by your mother, it will also help you to get rid of the germs and bacteria.

Other stuffs you need to know:

Don’t be super-hygienic. It would deteriorate your immunity. If you have a goal to erase all the bacteria on Earth, erase the goal from your Brain. Bacterium came long before us and would be probably here after we are gone too. Like it or not, we need to live with bacteria.

Glossary:

Bacteriophobia: Fear of bacteria.

That is all for today. Stay tuned! Cheers!
