Why are we afraid of it?

Spotlight. Oh god. Those moments of anyone’s life are really scary. What would happen if we misspell ‘fish’ as ‘piss’ or ‘water’ as ‘gutter’? What if you were suddenly pushed into the stage and were excepted to speak? Of course, you would start imitating a goldfish. What would happen to our name? It would be mixed into the mud. Or worse. It is a matter of prestige, you know. 


Scientific facts and ways not to be Glossophobic:

Okay Okay. Glossophobic is really common among humans. At least 7 to 8 students in a class suffer from Glossophobia. But why are we scared of speaking in public?

The reason is simple. Have you ever tried to stare anyone with perfect eye-contact without blinking? After few seconds, you might start feeling uneasy and would look somewhere else. Now imagine hundreds and thousands of pairs of eyes staring at you? Not afraid? Well, you must not be a glossophobic then....

Except from this eye-contact-theory, we are also afraid if we would speak every sentence, every word and every syllablecorrectly. Hence, we break into tension and our fight-or-flight mechanism kicks out. So our brains goes like- ‘We would leg it, right? On three. Oneeee, twooo....’

Those of you who don’t know fight-or-flight mechanism, it is actually an tendency to make our heart rate faster and pump more blood to the legs and arms so that you can either ‘fight’ the scary thing or ‘flight’. This happens especially when you are afraid. Drowning, for instance.

Now, the possibilities of getting hurt, let alone being killed, is a zero. You might get loud boos or a basket of rotten veggies flying if you speak bad which can hurt your inner feelings but will not hurt you physically.

So now how can you make yourself fearless? Simple. Practise a lot. Enrol yourself in public speaking groups. If you work on it, you might become one of the best speakers in your class!

  Rubik’s cube is one of the most famous puzzles in which people try competing each other for whom would solve the Rubik’s Cube faster.
